The Beginning of Islam
Lesson objectives:
Students should be able to:
1) identify beginning of Islam.
2) name the successors of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
3) define the beliefs of Islam
4) identify major accomplishments of Muslims
5) list the five pillars of Islam
1) Islam is the religion that occurred in the Arabian Peninsula.
2) A peninsula is a piece of land that is bordered by water on three sides but connected to mainland.
3) The Arabian Peninsula is a land area in the North East of Africa. The Red Sea to the west, the Arabian Gulf to the northeast, and the Indian Ocean to the southeast border it. It is located in the Asia. The countries that constitute the Arabian Peninsula are: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Oman, and Yemen. Saudi Arabia covers the greater part of the peninsula. The Arabian Peninsula is mainly a desert, however, there are mountain ranges that receive great rainfall in the southwest.
4) Islam occurred after the birth of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) in the year 570 A.D.
5) A.D. refers to the years after Jesus was born.
6) This area was mainly a desert and was occupied by many tribes known as Bedouins.
7) These tribes used to have wars because of their need for water and grazing land (lands covered with grass suitable for raising animals and cattle).
8) When Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) started spreading the religion, the Arab tribes started uniting under the name of one holy God, Allah.
a. Oneness of God: Allah is the one and only and He is the creator of the universe and everything in it. (Teachers can also refer to the story of Adam and Eve).
b. Angels: creatures created from light by Allah Almighty to serve and worship him
c. Existence of successive prophets: Muslims believe in the birth of several prophets before the birth of the last prophet Mohammad (PBUH). All prophets should be respected.
d. Islam believes in the presence of the 4 Holy Books mentioned on page 9.
e. Judgment Day
f. Belief in destiny: in its good and bad
