Unit 4 Lesson 3: Climate Regions

Unit 4 Lesson 3: Climate Regions

Lesson target:

students will recognize the different climate regions

Students should be able to:

1) identify the different climate regions

2) list the characteristics of each climate region

3) identify what vegetation is

If climate differs from one place to another, might we have something called climate zones? (Answer: yes)

Try and label certain countries in the world based on their climate?

(Saudi Arabia: hot climate, Canada: cold climate, Africa: dry)

Tropical:

Hot and humid

Humid:

Containing a high amount of water or water vapor

Arid:

Lifeless, dry, lacking moisture

Highlands:

Mountainous or hilly section of a country

Tundra:

Treeless plains between the icecap and the tree line of Arctic regions

Continental climate:

Hot summers, cold winters, little rainfall

Tropical Moist

Wet-dry Tropical

Dry Climate

Year-round warm temperature

Humidity

Abundant rainfall

Rainforests grow

Very little rainfall

Dry all year

Ground covered with grass and scattered trees

Drought resistant

Not good for planting

Also called Savanna climate

Less precipitation

Summers and days are very hot

Nights and winters are very cold

Plants like cactus grow there

Mediterranean

Moist-cold

Moist continental

Polar

Warm to hot temperature in summer

Mild wet winter

Citrus fruits/ olives

Moist climate

Receives rainfall all year

Cold winter/ mild summer

Fertile lands

Warm to cool summer/receives rainfall in summer

Cold winter/ heavy snow

Permanent snow or glaciers

No trees

Exercise 1: Complete the table by naming 5 climate regions of the world; then write one characteristic of each climate.

Tropical moist climate

abundant rainfall

Wet- dry tropical climate

drought resistant

Dry climate

very hot

Mediterranean climate

warm to hot temperature in summer

Polar climate

Covered with permanent snow

Exercise 2: What is the climate of the country you live in? What makes you think so?

(Answers will vary)

Exercise 3: Is it possible to live in a polar climate? Why or why not?

It is not impossible, but it is extremely difficult to live in such a climate since it never gets warm there. Only researchers usually stay there for a limited period of time.
