Lesson objectives:
1) Define phobia
2) Identify the different types of phobia
Phobia:
Phobia isn’t a disease but a state of extreme fear of something.
Normal fear:
All people might feel scared; it is not a continuous fear which appears at all times; caused by a certain condition like an accident, natural disaster, war.
Phobia:
Extreme fear of a specific situation the person can’t face; it is not shared by all people; it is irrational, caused by a life experience during childhood.
Kinds of phobias:
It is a normal feeling to be scared when confronting an audience when we are young.
What if we grow old and this goes on?
In that case, it will get to be a phobia. Some people face such a fear so they start having butterflies, sweating.
They can’t confront an audience at all: this is a kind of social phobia
Examples:
Social phobia:
Fear of social situations
Claustrophobia:
Fear of closed-in spaces
Agoraphobia:
Fear of public spaces/ refuse to go out
Aerophobia:
Fear of planes and traveling by them
Other kinds of phobias:
Fear of clowns, blood, animals
How do people know that they are suffering from a certain phobia?
Symptoms of phobia:
- Panic attack
- Tense muscles
- Trembling, sweating
- Stomach discomfort
- Quick heartbeats
How should phobia be treated?
a. Avoid embarrassing situations
b. Adapt to stress and manage it
c. Go on medication
d. Sit for sessions of psychotherapy
(get exposed to the situation the person feels gradually until he gets better)
